Romanian Nicolae Tonitza’s painting "Study for a portrait" ("Studiu pentru un portret") was sold in a public art auction at Bucharest's Monavissa auction house for the record sum of 320,000 Romanian RON (some 100,000 euro) on Sunday.

Thus, the painting is the most expensive work of art ever sold in Romania. The starting price for the painting was 172,000 RON.

The oil canvas exceeded the price paid for a Theodor Pallady' painting, "Nud cu esarfa galbena" (Nude in yellow scarf) of 230,000 Romanian RON.
