Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu said on Monday he would not vote in a referendum called by incumbent President Traian Basescu on the introduction of an uninominal voting system in Romania.

Iliescu, who now serves as honorary leader of the Social-Democrats (PSD, the main opposition party in Romania) does not agree with scheduling the referendum in the same day as Romania's first European Parliament elections in late November.

Iliescu says that he would even suggest a boycott at the referendum, Romanian TV news station Antena 3 reports, quoted by Rador.

Iliescu added that the upcoming elections are an essential political moment for the country and that President Basescu should not interfere in the process.
