Head of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana, along with the executive board with the party, search for solutions to sanction and maybe even expel former Romania president Ion Iliescu, suspected of voting against the PSD anti-government motion on Wednesday.

According to sources within PSD, the video footage during the vote can't prove that Iliescu voted against the motion. Even more, Geoana and his lieutenants fear that expelling Iliescu may lead to a spit within the party.

The main reason to fear this is that many PSD senators are loyal to Iliescu and, according to some information, would agree to quit PSD and form a new party.

Mircea Geoana announced on Thursday sanctions against the PSD parliamentarians who voted against the motion. Four of them already saw their political support withdrawn and are threatened with expelling.
