Romanian parliamentarians rejected on Wednesday, with 220 votes in favor and 152 against, the motion to bring down the Government, tabled by the main Opposition party, Social Democrats (PSD).

After the events during the past few days, it seems that the fact was possible due to an agreement between the governing Liberals (PNL) and PSD.

Rumors focus on two scenarios: one referring to PSD obtaining seats in the government, another to a PSD interior move to add yet another mistake to the balance of current party president, Mircea Geoana.

In order to pass the motion, PSD needed 232 votes. 7 PSD Senators and 15 PSD deputies voted against the motion, as well as a Democrat deputy.

PSD chief negotiator, Viorel Hrebenciuc, says that the motion was a success, rather than a failure, since it was voted by 220 parliamentarians, after only 140 MPs signed it.

"The cowardly behavior of some parliamentarians allowed the Government to survive", said PSD head Mircea Geoana after the vote. In his opinion, the result of the vote represents a missed opportunity for Romania in finding a new beginning.
