George Maior, general manager of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), declared on Wednesday that he wouldn't agree with the formation of a specialized institution for phone tapings.

A recent project discussed in the Parliament referred to the forming of a National Phone Interception Authority, autonomous from any intelligence service. Maior says that such an initiative would create vulnerabilities in the SRI activities.

Maior insists for a new national security law to be adopted as soon as possible, since the current law is "obsolete, an anachronism that doesn't correlate with the statute of NATO and EU member".

"The interception of communications represents an exceptional tool that should be used only under exceptional conditions, so it should be rigorously controlled legally", said Maior.
