During the first six months of the year, the current account of the balance of payments registered a deficit of over 7.8 billion euro, an increase of over 108% as H1 2006, the National Romanian Bank (BNR) announced on Tuesday.

The commercial balance deficit grew by 77.1% and was the main cause to the increase of the current account deficit.

At the end of June, the external debt on the medium and long term was higher than 31.5 billion euro and registered an increase of 11.2% as compared to the same period in 2006.

According to the information released by the central bank, the current account deficit of the mentioned period was covered by 38% through the foreign direct investments which amounted more than 2.96 billion euro.
