Pope Benedict XVI has sent a condolence telegram to the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church and a delegation of the Holy Chair to attend the Funerary Ceremonies of the Patriarch of the BOC, a press release of the Apostolic Nunciature announces on Tuesday.

In the telegram, the Pope expressed his condolences and affirmed the spiritual support to both the Church and the population. Moreover, the telegram reiterated the historical invitation made by the late Patriarch to Pope John Paul II to visit Romania in 1999.

The Patriarch died on Monday, July 30 at Fundeni hospital due to a series of complications after a surgical intervention.
