The head of medical services in Hungary, Ferenc Falus, declared for AFP that the heat wave may have killed some 500 people between July 15 and 22. “The average temperature was over 30 degrees Centigrade in most of Hungary. The death toll increased some 30% in the Central Hungary, compared to the 2006 summer”, said Falus.

Ferenc Falus also claims that the heat wave caused the premature death of 230 in the central area of Hungary. A new temperature record was noted in Kiskunhalas, 130 kilometers South of Budapest: 41.9 degrees Centigrade (107.42 Fahrenheit).
