Artificial sweeteners and coloring agents will be banned from use in newly-born and baby foods, the European Parliament decided on Wednesday. MAPs also decided that additives may be used only in such a manner as not to create a false impression on the freshness of the product. Artificial flavors can be used only if the desired effect can't be achieved using spices.

Also on Wednesday, MEPs decided to ban the sale of mercury-based measuring instruments, mainly thermometers, manometers and barometers. Second-hand instruments can still be bought and sold, the ban referring only to newly produced instruments.

The measure came as a result of growing concern on the effects of the mercury on people and environment.
