Rome mayor Walter Veltroni was expected to visit Romania on Monday and Tuesday to discuss with government representatives and local authorities about the situation of Romanian illegal immigrants in Italy.

According to the Italian press, Veltroni is interested in establishing contacts with local authorities from the regions where the majority of Romanian immigrants come from.

Moreover, the mayor is set to sign a protocol with the Romanian Government to favor the repatriation of Romanians established in Rome before the country became a member of the EU this year.

According to Il Tiempo newspaper, the mayor of Rome will meet during its stay both government representatives and those of the main cities where the Romanian emigrants in Italy come from.

One of the main issues to be addressed by the Italian authorities is that of the hundreds illegal immigrants from Romania settled in the capital city. Among those, the most 'advertised' cases are those of the Romanian Rroma communities who are grouped in improvised camps near Rome.
