Romanian prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu was due to meet European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso and European Parliament president Hans-Gert Poettering in Brussels on Tuesday, two weeks before the Commission presents its latest evaluation of the progress registered by Romania on the path of reform.

Also on Tuesday, Foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu travels to the US for a three-day visit that would include a meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other prominent members of the Bush Administration.

The visit comes as the US and Russia have been involved in a sharp exchange over American plans to install a missile shield in Europe and establish US bases in Romania.
