Two parties announced on Tuesday they would not support a motion submitted by the Democratic Party (PD), President Traian Basescu’s main backer, against the Liberal-dominated Government.

Social Democratic (PSD, opposition) leader Mircea Geoana said his group and announced the long-term strategy of his party regarding the troubles of the political stage these days would be announced on Friday. Hungarian Democrats (UDMR), who are a junior member of the governing coalition, also said they would oppose the move.

The Social Democrats’ stance was announced as it came to light that President Traian Basescu himself had a meeting with the PSD leadership late on Monday night. According to sources from both the PSD and the PD, the parties agreed that the PSD table another motion against the government, one that would be supported by PD.

The sources said PD leader Emil Boc was also present at the talks with the President.

The PSD leadership is holding a meeting today attended by US Ambassador Nicholas Taubman, who is expected to meet Mircea Geoana.

Also today, Hungarian Democrats leader Marko Bela said in a press conference that his party would vote against the PD-supported motion against the government as “it is not possible that we’re part of the government and vote for a change of government”.

The PD motion against the government has already been tabled at the Parliament and is due to be debated on Thursday then voted upon next Monday.

The PD, which was removed from an alliance with PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s Liberals (PNL) this spring, said the motion would show what the political landscape and alliances really look like these days as the PD passed in the opposition despite having the support of most Romanian people, according to polls.
