Romania is in a “far from acceptable situation” when it comes to environment issues, President Traian Basescu said in a speech on Tuesday with the occasion of World Environment Day.

He said Romania was much behind old members of the European Union in terms of environment and mentioned garbage dumps, used water treatment and recycling where the country has yet to do a lot.

He warned that the Romanian capital, Bucharest, does not yet have a water treatment plant so that all residuals in the Bucharest sewers eventually reach the Danube river. “An investment started in 2003 is like an emblem for how much environment was ignored over the past 50 years”, he said.

The main problems persist because they’re related to the mentality of Romanians in this regard, Basescu believes.
