The European Union prepares to introduce an European organ donor card valid for all EU citizens, in all EU states. The idea was suggested by the European Commissioner for Health, Markos Kyprianou, in an attempts to increase the number of donors, according to BBC.

Latest statistics show that most Europeans would agree to use such a card.

"Organ donors save lives. An European donor card and common standards for all EU countries might ensure the necessary organs for transplants", said Kyprianou.

Some 40,000 patients needing transplants are on the EU states' waiting lists.

The organ donation is best supported in Sweden (81%), but doesn't seem as a successful project in Romania, where only 27% of the poll respondents said they would donate.
