“In case there are objective reasons, the European Commission must decide to activate some safeguarding clauses for Romania and Bulgaria", declared the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli Rehn, in an interview for the French newspapers Le Figaro.

The response came to the paper's question on whether the EC will chose to sanction Romanian and Bulgaria for "their poor balance in fighting corruption". Rehn also mentioned that the activation of safeguarding clauses is also part of the "credibility of EU's enlargement process".

Rehn's statement were made one day before being repeated by the Justice Commissioner, Franco Frattini, in an interview for “European Voice”, according to the Romanian TV station Realitatea TV.
