94.5% of Romanians living in New York voted against the dismissal of President Traian Basescu in the May 19 referendum, according to results announced by the electoral commission in the US city. Of a total of 1,271 Romanians who voted there, only 65 supported the president’s dismissal.

The result far exceeds that of the 2004 presidential elections, when 80% of Romanians living in New York voted in favor of candidate Traian Basescu.

A total of 7,986 Romanians voted at voting sections across the US territory in the Saturday referendum.
