A common statement by the European People’s Party-Christian Democrats, Joseph Daul, and EPP president Wilfried Martens say in a joint statement published Saturday evening that they “welcome” the decision of the Romanian people in today’s referendum to reject a call to remove President Traian Basescu from office.

According to the two EP officials, this comes as proof that Romanians trust Basescu as the best person to represent their interests.

No matter the political orientation, the process of reform must continue in Romania, including the fight against corruption, law enforcement and strengthening the democratic institutions in the country, the statement says.

The two also warn that Romania fulfilling EU demands and standards is not a question of satisfying the rest of the Union, but are important for Romania itself.
