The permanent board of the Senate discussed the issue of the introduction of uninominal votes in Romanian elections on Tuesday. Senate interim speaker Doru Ioan Taracila said after talks today that he asked the leaders of the parliamentary groups to mobilize their men in the electoral code commission to start works on the project soon.

There are 18 legislative initiatives related to the introduction of uninominal votes, but MPs plan to focus on only two of them - that of the governing Liberals (PNL) and that of the main opposition party, the Social Democrats (PSD).

We hope that by the end of May the Parliament will have a bill on the uninominal vote”, Taracila said.

But he warned that if each parliamentary party sticks to their original proposals, then “it’s obvious we’ll never reach an accord” to be supported by the majority of the Parliament.
