General Virgil Ardelean lost his position as head of the Interior Ministry Intelligence Department, a structure similar to the Internal Affairs in the US Police. His place was taken by Petre Albu, former chief of the Organized Crime Brigade.

Ardelean submitted his resignation in 2006, along with the rest of the Intelligence services directors, after the still unexplained escape of Omar Hayssam from Romania.

Hayssam was the first citizen officially charged with terrorism in Romania, after some information unveiled that he was involved in the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq.
