The Democratic Party-PD has announced it would organize demonstration of support for suspended President Traian Basescu in several cities across Romania in the campaign leading to the May 19 referendum where Romanians are invited to say whether the head of state should be dismissed or not.

Basescu was suspended by the Parliament in April over charges that he broke the letter of the Constitution on several accounts, despite a Constitutional Court consultative decision that he did not do so.

PD is the party that Basescu led until 2004, when he was elected head of state and constitutionally forced to drop party membership.

A first PD demonstration will take place in Constanta on May 6, to be followed by Cluj-Napoca on May 9, Craiova on May 12 and Iasi on May 13.
