Romania ranks 40th among the world’s top 50 national greenhouse gas emitters, according to a Reuters report quoting UN and World Resources Institute data. Reuters publishes a table according to which Romania managed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions from 250 million tons at the beginning of 1990 to 125 million tons in 2000 before growing slightly back to 155 million tons in 2004.

The report shows the US, China, Russia and India as the world’s top four greenhouse gas emitters, with the United States reporting a 15% increase of emissions between 1990 and 2000. But the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia reported the most significant growth of emissions volume - 75% and 80% each.
