Although it seemed that NATO’s decision on the location of the 2008 summit will be postponed until September, the secretary general of the Alliance, Jaap de Hoop Schefer, publicly announced on Friday that Bucharest would have the honor to host the event.

Jaap de Hoop Schefer made the announcement during the official meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers, thus denying the rumors on a postponement of the decision.

HotNews.ro had previously informed on the intention to postpone the decision, quoting convergent statements of several Romanian officials. Even more, UK daily “The Economist” announced on Thursday that the NATO decision-makers had already decided that Bucharest is not a proper location.

Portugal was also a possible location. The stakes are high for the 2008 summit, since a decision is expected for the accession to EU of another three countries - Albania, Macedonia and Croatia.
