Cristian Diaconescu, vice-president and spokesman of the opposition Social Democrats (PSD) may be named head of Romania’s Foreign Intelligence Service-SIE, according to sources in the PSD and the National Liberal Party (PNL).

The position was left vacant after suspended President Traian Basescu’s ex-aide Claudiu Saftoiu resigned as head of SIE following a series of statements on phone interceptions before a parliamentary commission earlier this year.

Cristian Diaconescu was named a member of the Parliamentary Commission of SIE Control on Tuesday. He replaces PSD Senator George Maior, who was named head of the Romanian Intelligence Service - SRI by suspended President Traian Basescu.

Cristian Diaconescu served as Justice minister in the previous PSD government in March-December 2004.
