European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso has said he hoped Romanian institutions will be able to solve the political crisis confronting the country as soon as possible in accordance to the rules of democracy and the constitutional principles.

He made the statement shortly after he was informed by both suspended President Traian Basescu and PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu about Basescu’s suspension by the Parliament last week.

Romania knows it must push forward with necessary reforms in the field of justice and the fight against corruption, Barroso said.
