Romanian Senate speaker Nicolae Vacaroiu has become the interim president of Romania as the Constitutional Court decided on Friday to accept the intermediate presidency. The move comes a day after the Parliament voted to suspend President Traian Basescu and asked the court for official confirmation of the decision.

The Court convened on Friday to analyze documents submitted by the Parliament after its Thursday session.

A series of confusing information about whether the Court would make the decision today or over the weekend circulated throughout the day. Constitutional Court head Ioan Vida even told HotNews.ro at noon that it might be too early for a final approval of the documentation today.

Suspended President Traian basescu challenged the Parliament vote yesterday, but the Court rejected his claim and confirmed Senate speaker as the natural follower as interim President.
