The president of Romanian public broadcaster TVR dismissed media claims in a press conference on Sunday that the institution was in serious financial trouble but said bad management so far has led to a serious need of massive layoffs. He also confirmed plans to dismiss the head of the News Department.

A possible dismissal of News boss Rodica Culcer, known for her fierce political op-eds in the print media, has been linked by national newspapers with political pressure on the current leadership of TVR as Romania prepares for a series of elections over the next 36 months.

TVR head Tudor Giurgiu said that TVR - formed of two national interest channels, one cultural channel and an international channel - should go through a major restructuring process. That would solve a series of major technological, personnel, organizational and ethnical issues that TVR has been facing for years.
