The European Commissioner for common taxes and customs, Laszlo Kovacs, declared while in Bucharest that "Romania must change its legislation in the first registration tax area and it has at most only six months to do so".

In his vision, the tax has three problems: it discriminates, it doesn't correlate the age and the pollution degree with the amount to be paid and it only covers a limited period in a car's lifetime.

The Finance Ministry's spokesman, Stelian Negrea, declared for Hotnews.ro that "the Ministry negotiates with the EC experts in order to find a solution. It should be known that we're not in the middle of a juridical procedure within the European Commission, we are simply negotiating".

The European Commissioner reminded of the Hungarian case, when the lawsuit was lost in the European Court of Justice and the state had to refund the taxes, somewhere between 31 and 47 million euros.
