Political migration affected twice as many mayors last year than in 2005 with the governing Liberal (PNL) and Democratic (PD) parties luring most interest, a new study shows. The opposition Social Democrats (PSD) and the Greater Romania Party (PRM) reported most losses, the report published by the Bucharest-based Institute for Public Policies says.

Last year, the total number of PNL and PD-affiliated mayors exceeded that of PSD mayors for the first time. The fastest pace of political colour changing was recorded before a new low banning political migration came into effect last summer.

According to Adrian Moraru, the coordinator of the study, the number of transfered mayors last year might have equaled the record 37% reported in 2003 if the new law hadn’t been applied.
