Steaua Bucharest reported a huge victory on foreign soil last night as it crushed Dinamo Kiev with a 1-4 victory in Ukraine in the first Group E match of the Champions League.

Ghionea (3’), Badea (24’), and Dica (43’, 79’) brought silence to a 70,000-packed stadium that only showed some joy when Dinamo’s Rebrov brought some balance to the game with a goal in minute 15.

Dinamo Kiev failed to keep the pace with Steaua despite they dominated the second half, still losing goal opportunities twice. Steaua goalkeeper Carlos’ intervention was essential to keep the team way ahead of the Ukrainians, which allowed Dica to score a superb goal near the end of the match.

Steaua coach Cosmin Olaroiu said he only expected a victory, not a categoric one. “Steaua confirmed they’re worth to be here. Romanian football is going up and it’s good to prove this thing in the future as well”, he said.

And Dica said he expected a tough game but Steaua proved they’ve valor again and won. “I don’t believe Dinamo Kiev played weakly, it’s us who played very well”, he said.
