The general Eugen Badalan, Romania's Army Chief of Staff General , was placed under criminal investigation by the National Anticorruption Department (DNA) on Friday. The DNA made the move following the accusations in the press regarding a barter contract between the Army and the tyres producer Tofan group which involved the exchange of out-of-order military vehicles with new envelopes.

The barter contract entered into force within 2000-2004, when the Army exchanged four thousand vehicles with six thousand tyres, a trade that brought serious loss to the Army.

Badalan is charged in this case together with other 12 military officials, but he has been eyed by the prosecutors in another case involving a uniforms purchasing contract.
