Romania will introduce a new driving code on September 20 primising a lot of suprises for domestic and visiting drivers. One thing that would considerably affect the budget of careless Romanian drivers - but very unlikely for foreign ones - will be the introduction of penalty points that would accompany most contraventional fines.

Once a certain amount of points is reached, the driver’s license will be temporarily suspended.

A series of other new sanctions will be introduced: cars parked irregularly will be lifted and fines will be applied for cars driven with lights off during day time. The compulsory lighting during daytime is new for Romania, one of the very few European countries where such a regulation did not exist so far.

What foreign drivers should care about is another new regulation: minor driving irregularies may from now on be applied on spot by police officers.
