Romania obtained a highest-level official confirmation that the EU supported its accession on January 1, 2007 at the European Council talks last week, PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu has announced. But he warned that this did not mean Romania had time to relax, as the country should push harder with its accession efforts, both at government, parliament and administration level.

Tariceanu urged the Parliament to comply with its duties and adopt the most important laws necessary for EU accession, according to the calendar set with Romania’s European partners.

He said the European Council not only supported the January 2007 accession date, but also urged the European countries that have not ratified the accession treaty of Romania and Bulgaria to do so quickly.
