Romanian Defense minister Teodor Atanasiu will face the Defense Commission of the House of Deputies on Thursday to explain his position in the so-called “frigates scandal”, related to the procurement of two British second-hand frigates by the Romanian state several years ago.

Unofficial sources say it may be possible that the minister may be accompanied by the head of the military supply department of his Ministry as well as the head of the Romtehnica company, who negotiated the contract by which British company BAE System sold the two frigates to the Romanian state

The closed-door hearings follow Atanasiu’s statement on Tuesday that the contract included a clause that may support bribery, which says potential illegal commissions be paid back if reported.
