The upper chamber of the Romanian parliament rejected Thursday a simple motion filed by the opposition Social Democratic Party – PSD, in which the group called for the resignation of Agriculture minister Gheorghe Flutur over his “failure” to manage the bird flu crisis efficiently and promptly.

The motion was supported by the PSD and the far-right group Greater Romania Party, but could not defeat the vote of the governing coalition.

Prior to the vote, Flutur presented his own case before the parliamentarians, describing the measures taken by central and local authorities in combating the spread of the H5N1 virus across the country.
