Romanian President Traian Basescu is paying a visit to Paris on Tuesday and Wednsday for talks with his French counterpart Jacques Chirac, French Senate speaker Christian Poncelet, National Assembly speaker Jean-Louis Debre and members of the NA Foreign Affairs commission.

The talks will focus on Romania’s efforts to join the EU, as the Romanian head of state will press French officials to cover the Accession Treaty ratification process in due time to allow Romania join on January 1, 2007.

The visit comes as President Basescu is still recovering after a surgical intervention for hernia early this month.

Romania will also try to establish the coordinates of bilateral cooperation in the post-accession period.

And Basescu will also meet the secretary-general of the La Francophonie organization, which will hold a summit in Bucharest in September.

Basescu will then return to the Elias Hospital in Bucharest to continue the post-op recovery program he’s been following since May 17. Doctors say he might leave the hospital for good on Friday.
