Romanian vets placed parts of Bucharest District 5 under quarantine on Sunday night after tests confirmed the presence of the bird flu virus in the area. The quarantine was removed on Monday morning.

The city of Pitesti is also affected, while the total number of confirmed hotbeds rose to 89 over the weekend. The number already rose to 115 hotbeds on Monday, according to the latest evaluations.

According to local authorities, some 400 poultry were culled in Bucharest District 5, where the quarantine was due to be lifted on Sunday night.

The suspicions in the city of Pitesti arose when a local announced one of his chicken died, placing 12 households in quarantine for the culling of all poultry in the area. According to new regulation, the chicken are killed even before suspicions are confirmed officially.

Beside the 89 confirmed hotbeds across the country, H5N1 suspicions also exist in another 23 towns and villages from the counties of Mures, Arges and Brasov.
