Romanian authorities were on full alert once again on Monday as two new bird flu hotbeds were identifies in the counties of Brasov and Vrancea. The city of Fagaras, Brasov county, a curfew was announced while local officials announced poultry in the region would be soon euthanized and incinerated.

Road traffic through Fagaras was normal on Monday, but cars were disinfected at entrance and departure from the city. Transiting cars are not allowed to stop in the city.

According to a Realitatea TV report, employees at the Codlea chicken farm, the first organized institution in Romania where the H5 virus was identified this past weekend, will be isolated and quarantined.

Problems were also reported at Patiprod, a farm on the Codlea platform where quick tests congitmrf yhr H5 virus as well. According to the national TV station TVR, measures at farms in the Brasov area are unprecedented, as many employees were sent home or vaccinated and over 300,000 poultry are due to be sacrificed.

In the county of Covasna, where poultry from the Codlea farm was procured recently, eight disinfection filters were organized and all cars entering the county are checked for hazardous material. The population was warned to inform authorities about any suspicion of illness. Starting Monday, all agricultural fairs in the area will be closed.

Similar measures were announced for the counties of Mures and Sibiu.

Romanian Agriculture minister Gheorghe Flutur said the situation was under control as “we thoroughly check anything that happens” in affected area.
