The Romanian president Traian Basescu underwent a lumbar disc hernia surgery on Monday night in a hospital in Vienna, Austria. According to the Romanian presidency’s spokesperson Adriana Saftoiu, the surgery was concluded after approximately three hours, by 4 am on Tuesday morning. The Austrian hospital will provide a medical bulletin following the surgery.

The minister of Health Eugen Nicolaescu explained the choice of president Basescu to be operated abroad as the best decision given his condition which got worse on Monday evening and the unavailability of the best Romanian doctors after having worked all day on Monday.

After a seven hours examination yesterday at the Elias Hospital, the medical results indicated that president Basescu needed to undergo surgery immediately.

A new commission was set by the Health minister on Monday evening that adviced Traian Basescu to leave to Austria for this medical operation. Physician Sorin Oprescu had set another specialist commission that examined the president, and decided the surgery team, following the president’s initial option to be operated in Bucharest.
