The Bucharest football club Steaua celebrated the 20th anniversary of its victory against Barcelona in the European Championship in 1986 in the bloodiest manner possible on Saturday, when the team lost 0-1 in a National Championship match against Gloria Bistrita.

Two Steaua players left the field in blood as they seriously harmed themselves in protest against referee decisions during the match.

It all started when player Victoras Iacob was eliminated from the field following a conflict with players in the Gloria Bistrita half. Iacob left nervously and hit a window with his fist and wrist: glass pieces cut his veins and he was immediately transported to the hospital for medical care.

A similar gesture came from another Steaua player, captain Mirel Radoi, who cut a hand tendon and was also rushed to hospital. He would not be able to play for at least three weeks.

The incident comes as Steaua recently lost the UEFA Cup semifinals against Middlesbrough and a National Championship match against Rapid, a team it managed to oust from the UEFA Cup in the quarterfinals.

And Steaua manager M.M. Stoica was sanctioned after Gloria Bistrita officials claimed he called them and local gendarmes names in outbursts of fury during the match – a claim Stoica dismisses.
