Anti-graft prosecutors in Bucharest have initiated a criminal inquiry against internationally reputed Proffesor Dr. Adrian Streinu Cercel and Dr. Serban Bradisteanu, a head of section of a local hospital, as well as against five other people for abuse in office, the head of the National Anti-Corruption Department (DNA) Daniel Morar announced on Thursday.

The list of the indicted includes a head of section at the Military Hospital in Bucharest, three former Justice Ministry officials and a former head of prison medical staff in Romania.

They are suspected of procuring medical equipment worth over 4 million euro by breaching legal provisions on public procurement as they have served commercial contracts to other firms than the best placed in tenders.

According to prosecutors’ evaluations, the irregularities back in 2001 produced a 3 million euro hole in the Justice Ministry budget at the time.
