The Romanian Government decided on Wednesday to include the sin tax within the excise category for its simpler collection. The news comes in the wake of the Fiscal Code adjustment. The changes brought to the law entail the new excises to come into force starting July 1, 2006, as the negotiations with EU have established.

The introduction of a sin tax to be levied for cigarettes and alcohol was envisaged to bring money to the state budget, in particular to the Health budget. Starting this July, the alcohol excise will go up 60 percent, while tobacco 29 percent.
