The swollen Danube continued to produce major damage in South Romania on Monday as the most serious situation was reported in Calarasi, where the barge connecting the Romanian city of Chiciu to the Bulgarian Silistra was seriously damaged. A hotel complex in the area, Podul 4, and some 40 cars were also covered by waters after a dam on the Danube channel of Borcea collapsed.

Tourists and hotel personnel were saved by boat.

Also on Monday, authorities were breaking the protection dam in Modelu to prevent the flooding of hundreds of households, while another controlled flooding was announced in Facaeni, Ialomita district.

And in Constanta several hundred people were evacuated as hundreds of households and thousands of hectares of agricultural land were covered by Danube waters.

The river has been swelling since last week and has already exceeded its historical records in some areas.
