A new banknote is to be infused on the Romanian market starting December 2006. The 200 RON banknote, the equivalent of approximately 57 Euros, adds to the other 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 RON banknotes.

The new one will display the portrait of Romanian poet and philosopher Lucian Blaga on one side, and on the other the statue of "Thinker of Hamangia".

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Mugur Isarescu, Governor of the Romania National Bank (BNR), who said that a new banknote similar to that of 50 Euros would help Romanians to get more used to the European currency.

The denomination process in Romania started in July 2005, when four zeros were dropped hence turning the 10,000 lei banknote into the new monetary unit of 1 ROmanian New (RON).
