The head of the National Liberal Party (PNL), prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, intervened in a debate that’s gripped the Romanian political scene for the last several weeks on Monday. He said the latest version of the draft Lustration Law, which has been a Liberal initiative, contains amendments that have modified the initial draft and have turned into "excesses" that must be corrected.

He argued against changes to the draft that are aimed at President Basescu, former PM turned Liberal politician Teodor Stolojan or other people because that would only be a sample of vengeful behaviour, against the original idea of the law.

The draft legislation si to be voted by the Romanian Senate Monday afternoon.
