The joint houses of the Romanian Parliament adopted with a large majority on Thursday a series of amendments to the draft law on the statute of parliamentarians, legislation that had been sent back to legislators by President Traian Basescu.

Basescu objected to an article of the draft that said parliamentarians that had not been elected before and had no pension rights yet should receive a transitional allocation from their respective chamber for six months, untill they regain a regular income as employees or from independent activities.

Yet again, parliamentarians confronted on the issue, but they opted to reduce the allocation term to three months. They argued the practice was common in many EU countries.

Various groups also argued on increased pensions for parliamentarians, but settled on a pension level similar to that of judges.
