Over 300 lorries and trucks were arriving in Bucharest on Monday morning for a protest organized by the national council of road transporters. The protest is aimed at eliminating a special tax applied to drivers using national roads as well as a series of traffic restrictions for trucks and the annulment of the registration tax for Euro 4 and Euro 5 vehicles.

Protests are expected to expand throughout the country, according to Romanian news television Realitatea TV.

The Bucharest protest was not aimed at blocking traffic in the capital city of Romania but only to bring attention to drivers' needs, a trade union representative, Ion Lixandru, said. He added in a statement for the Romanian public radio that the prime minister should consult transporters before making decisions on various new taxes.
