Romania President Traian Basescu declared in a interview for the Romanian public radio station that former President Ion Iliescu was a specialist in coups d'etat. He added that Social Democratic member (PSD) Iliescu negotiated with Liberal PM Tariceanu his temporary suspension pending a much hyped referendum to impeach the head of state a year ago. In return, Basescu said that Tariceanu received the unconditional parliamentary support of the opposition party for the unstable government he was running.

Basescu added that the Constitutional Court is indirectly defending parliamentarians investigated in high corruption cases and added that justice officials entered its game even if legally they could have escaped it.

President Basescu took the opportunity to criticize politicians currently investigated by anti-graft prosecutors, like former PSD PM Adrian Nastase or former Transports minister Miron Mitrea. Basescu said that Nastase was most surely seeking to take up another political function.
