The Romanian government approved on Monday an emergency ordinance on the third version of the first car registration tax, news television channels report. The new version of the first car registration tax takes into account the technical data of each car based on the carbon gas emissions. The state is due to return the difference between the new and the old version to people who had to pay the latter when they bought cars over the past year.

The government last month discussed the emergency ordinance that introduced the new version of the first car registration tax in the form of an environmental tax. The bill was then subjected to public debate and participants were able to recommend several changes like the possibility to pay in installments.

Others recommended an non-discriminatory approach, that would disregard the owners and their status. The Government does not have to take into account the recommendations put forward but PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu said that some of the proposals will actually be integrated into the new legislation.
