With some 240,000 cars produced last year Romania takes the 14th place among European car making economies, way behind the Czech Republic, Poland or Slovakia, according to the International Organization of Automobile Producer's data. As Ford chose Romania to set up its new production factory and with Dacia's production expansion, in three years time Romania could reach a top 10 position.

Germany was by far the biggest car producer, with 6.2 million units among which half a million were commercial cars. France followed with 3 million units and Spain with 2.9 million. UK and Russia occupy the fourth and fifth place.

Compared to other countries in the region, Romania's score is also worse: in the Czech Republic car production was four times greater than the one in Romania while Poland outran Romania by producing three times as many cars.
