Some 38 people from Romania and the US were accused of computer and credit card fraud, US General Attorney Mark R. Filip and his Romanian counterpart Laura Codruta Kovesi have declared. Romanian citizens involved in the fraud obtained thousands of account numbers and additional personal information of people by sending more than 1.3 million spam messages in one phishing attack, a press release of the US Embassy in Bucharest announces.

Victims were thus lured to fill in their personal information on fake sites and thus felons were able to obtain the needed information to extract the needed money from various ATMs. According to the official press release, the accused come from both the US and from other countries like Canada, Pakistan, Portugal and Romania.

According to a Symantec statistics, Romania is the only European country to host so many phishing attacks as it is ranked number 3 in a global listing.
